Now that school is back in session, you should incorporate posture checks into your family’s routine. Poor posture increases the risk of back pain, neck pain, and spinal conditions that can affect academic and sports performance. At Family Chiropractic Center, we specialized in family-based chiropractic care and posture correction in Coral Springs, FL. Our experienced chiropractors offer posture correction and chiropractic care that can improve your family’s overall health and wellness. Learn how to do a posture check, and why it’s so important.

What Is a Posture Check?

A posture check or posture screening is a wellness test to assess your child’s posture. During a posture check, you or one of our chiropractors will look for postural imbalances and signs of poor posture. Children undergo rapid stages of development, and spinal issues that progress slowly in adults can progress more quickly in children. We recommend that you screen your child’s posture at least once per year. Back to school season is a good reminder to check your child’s posture.

What Posture Checks Are Screening For

When you assess your child’s posture, you are looking for signs of slouching, hunched shoulders, weight that is balanced unevenly or indicates your child favors one leg over another, and signs of spinal misalignment or spinal imbalances. Our chiropractors screen for signs of scoliosis and kyphosis when we complete posture checks on children and adolescents. Both conditions cause a curve of the spine that can affect your child’s development and health.

How to Do a Posture Check

Have your child stand facing a wall with their feet planted firmly at hip’s width. Direct them to keep their head up and level. Assess whether your child’s:

  • Shoulders and hips are level
  • Head is straight over their shoulders
  • Spaces between their arms on both sides are equal
  • Kneecaps are level and facing forward
  • Feet are pointed slightly outward and are symmetrical

Next, assess your child’s posture from the side. Make sure your child’s:

  • Head is upright and isn’t tilted forward
  • Chin is parallel to the floor
  • Shoulders are not rounded or hunched forward
  • Shoulders are in line with their ears
  • Lower back is slightly curved forward
  • Stomach is not protruding forward due to a curvature in the lower back or spine
